TV9 Promotes Safe and Eco-Friendly Green Diwali

Come Diwali the skies turn into a beautiful canopy. Colourful fireworks create fanciful patterns and the sound of crackers fill the neighbourhood. It is all fun, light and sound but something that creates joy also turns into a cause for concern. Fireworks, in their present form, can become a major pollutant and cause serious health problems.

For many years now TV9 has been promoting a safe and eco - friendly Green Diwali. TV9 has  been reaching out to public through its telecast of awareness campaigns, scrolls, news stories and 'Green Diwali' campaign promos.

TV9 over the years has telecast many shows wherein celebrities have endorsed a green Diwali which will keep children and pets safe. TV9 has promoted usage of mud lamps in place of plastic lamps. There have been LIVE reports from Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam about Diwali revellers views on green Diwali. Doctor bytes about precautions for eye care has been a major campaign. After the Supreme court verdict this year there seems to have been a reduction in high decibel crackers everywhere.

Grace Cancer Run

Head and neck (mouth, larynx, throat or nose) cancers account for a large portion of the total number of cancer cases reported in India, and nearly half of the patients with such type of cancers die within a year of diagnosis. Over 1.7 lakh cancer cases are reported every year of which 76% are males; many patients come for treatment only after cancer has reached advanced stage.

Nearly 70% of head and neck cancers are related to consumption of  tobacco, areca nut and alcohol. Unfortunately, these causative agents are freely available either due to weak policy or implementation, or absence of it.

Recently TV9 supported Race For Grace, a cancer awareness run and urged people to stay away from tobacco. The run is a chance to challenge oneself, set new limits and reduce cancer risk by being physically active. Early detection is the key to conquering cancer and anyone can make meaningful and significant changes in lifestyle to  prevent occurrence of cancer.

TV9 telecast promos on social media platforms, aired scrolls and covered the event LIVE to spread awareness regarding the importance of early detection as it goes a long way in preventing cancer complications.

The race to save lives run was organised by Grace Cancer Foundation. People from all walks of life joined the run in the fight against cancer and ran alongside those who are impacted by cancer. Hyderabad CP Anjani Kumar flagged off the run where nearly seven thousand young men and women participated.

HelpAge India

TV9 has been associated with the National level NGO HelpAge India's Hyderabad chapter for many years. For an estimated 104 million elderly in India, more than fifty percent suffer abuse and neglect from kith and kin. Property issues were found to be the prime reason.

As a channel that stands for the motto 'Better Society' TV9 has been sensitising viewers to take care of their parents and the elderly. TV9 feels the need to understand senior citizens issues and has been scrolling Toll-free Elder Helpline numbers.  The Helpline links elders to various institutions such as old age homes, hospitals, police, government and non-governmental organizations.

The 2018 'Elder Abuse Study' report, released by HelpAge India found that sons were the foremost perpetrators of elder abuse. The main reason for abuse was related to the abuser wanting to live independently, property, lack of resources to meet the needs of elders and dislike for the senior’s way of living. Though there is greater understanding among seniors about abuse, reporting remains dismally low while many did not know how to deal with the problem, suggesting lack of awareness.

TV9 has been creating awareness among the elders about their rights under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior citizens Act, 2007 by focussing on the issue in half an hour discussion based programs. TV9 has been airing promos, scrolls and has done coverage of many initiatives of HelpAge India.

Joy of giving

DaanUtsav is India's own festival that celebrates giving. It takes place every year from the 2nd to 8th October, providing its citizens the opportunity to contribute time, money, materials or skills to benefit an individual, organization or cause. October 2nd marks the birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, who has inspired people world over to give back to society.

Over the past 10 years, TV9 has been promoting Joy of Giving Week, encouraged and inspired many. What started out as a simple idea, is now a mass movement of giving involving corporates, schools, colleges, not-for-profits, governments and communities. Ideas and inspiring acts of generosity are there in abundance, and TV9 has telecast programs on organisations that helped those in need.

DaanUtsav is about celebrating the ability to do something for others. It is also about recognising that there is great joy to be found in giving of oneself, bringing a smile on the face of another, or helping someone overcome a difficult situation, even if only momentarily.  DaanUtsav is promoted by hundreds of volunteers across the length and breadth of India.

TV9 has encouraged people to join the celebrations. It could be spending time with the elderly, giving books, toys and other material to those who cannot afford them or volunteering at the local animal shelter.

TV9 Seed Ball Campaign 2018 : Gift Greenery to your kids

TV9 Seed Ball Campaign 2018

TV9's commitment towards environmental issues is evident with the revival of Seed Ball campaign. In a recent study published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), researchers warned that if climate change continues at its current pace, deadly heatwaves could make large parts of South Asia too hot for human survival by the end of the century. Up to 1.5 billion people could see their hometowns in the densely populated agricultural regions of the Ganges and Indus river basins become impossible to live in, according to the report.

Also, the indiscriminate felling of trees has been continuing unabated in almost all the cities of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana either for laying of a drainage line or for Metro works. It has been eating into the trees in two States that already has scarce green cover. Many trees that can be translocated are being mercilessly cut down. Therefore last year in 2017 when TV9 initiated Seed ball campaign many schools in the 10 districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana eagerly participated.

                                Do you know " Seed Balls " ? : Future With Greenery - TV9

This year we plan to take our campaign forward with more schools and colleges To add strength to this campaign a group of young students called Green Warriors have joined the initiative.  On June 30th, 2018 Government officials, celebrities will be joining the event live as we air it from six districts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The aim of the campaign is to build urban forestry and to provide greenery in barren and man made deserts using seed ball technique. It’s the easiest way to grow plants around the world and it has become an annual practice of TV9 to take this cause forward.

                                       Gift " Greenery " to your kids with " Seed balls " - TV9

In the seed ball technique, seeds are placed in the middle of a ball made up of moist mixture of clay and red soil.  The seed ball becomes hard when dried in shade. This dried, hard seed ball is then sowed or tossed in waste lands, dry lands, uninhabited lands. The rains soak the seed ball, germinating the seed inside. The sprouting seed uses the nutrients of the seed ball and grows into a tree.

Go Green Ganesha Campaign 2018 by TV9

Go Green Ganesha Campaign

Go Green Ganesha Campaign 2018 by TV9 was telecast LIVE on 15th September. It is an annual event of the channel to promote eco -  friendly clay Ganesh idols. Inspired by the channel's campaigning past three years, awareness among people of two Telugu states has grown manifold and people started to worship environment friendly idols in large numbers. Many celebrities have participated in LIVE show and supported TV9's effort in promoting environment friendly Ganeshas.

This year TV9 teamed up with Green Warriors - a student organisation of Shreyas Engineering College at Nagole in Hyderabad. Nearly two thousand idols were made with clay that were later immersed in buckets filled with water. The astounding response of students and their eco friendly initiative has been recognized and appreciated when the college made an entry into the "Asian Book of Records".  Also seed embedded clay Ganesh idols were encouraged for the seed to sprout into saplings in pots. TV9 had also held eco - friendly idol making workshops in many Government schools in Hyderabad, Warangal, Mahabubnagar, Khammam of Telangana and Vizag, Vijayawada, Nellore districts in Andhra Pradesh where thousands of children participated. Children pledged their support to save environment and said no to chemically harmful POP idols. TV9 strives to imbibe and instill eco - friendly environmental ideas and practices in future generations.

From many years TV9 has been trying to be a role model in the making of a huge eco- friendly Ganesh to show people that it is possible to have greener options instead of POP idols prevalent for the festival all over the country.

In 2015 September TV9 in association with Doondi Ganesh Seva Samiti set up eco- friendly Ganesh at Ghantasala Sangeeta Kalasala in Vijayawada.  The sixty three feet tallest Ganesh entered the Limca Book of Records. In the making of Ganesh twenty-five tonnes of iron, thirty tonnes of wood, seventy tonnes of clay and one a half-ton of coconut fibre was used. On an average two lakh people visited the idol everyday for a period of eleven days. Celebrities also graced the festivities

Chenetha Santha - Handloom revival initiative

Chenetha Santha - Handloom revival initiative

Textile industry is second only to the agricultural sector in terms of workforce and employment potential. Only few States managed to put in place policies that helped modernise and integrate the production processes. Powerlooms in Maharashtra and Gujarat and Tamil Nadu managed to survive the market-centred approach.

The traditional weavers of two Telugu states have neither the means to invest in modern technology nor market-savvy master weavers to help them adapt to changing consumer tastes. With their products becoming uncompetitive in the market, stocks mounted, of work began to decline and the weavers have been facing joblessness, mounting debt, starvation and, consequently, death.

TV9 as part of its CSR activity has been supporting handloom weavers market Chenetha Santha since three years. Environmentalist, documentary filmmaker and farmer, Saraswati Kavula happened to visit a handloom cooperative society in Koyalagudem village in Nalgonda district in 2015. After learning the hardships of handloom weavers and the amount of effort they put in throughout the day producing the fabric which is eco-friendly, healthy for people of these climatic conditions, she thought she should market their products directly to customers.

Saraswati started Chenetha Santha under Chenetha Chaitanya Vedika platform in 2015 with an intention of lending a helping hand to handloom weavers by making them sell their products directly to customers. The bi-monthly santha or fair is organised for three days at Nagarjuna Nagar Community Hall,  Ameerpet in Hyderabad. Consumers are given the opportunity to buy authentic handloom and Khadi directly from weavers.

TV9 believes that the time-tested skills of our artisans and craftsmen should be respected and propagated and their craft sustained. TV9 has been promoting the cause of handloom weavers by giving free scrolls, promos and coverage. With constant weaver interaction we have been bringing out their internal stories. Poverty stricken weavers have come out in the open and spoke about how they faced losses between cooperative societies and powerlooms.

Through these Santhas the weavers are able to earn and interact directly with their customers.

'Suicide Prevention Day' awareness programs by Roshni - TV9 For Better Society

Roshni
Roshni Trust is a voluntary organization that offers support to the depressed and the suicidal. TV9 has been associated with Roshni for close to ten years now. At a time when there was little awareness and information on mental health, TV9 dealt with the topic and raised conversations through many programs and free public service messages.

TV9 has been interviewing many people throughout ten years who spoke about their journey of  battling the disease depression and how others held on to hope when things looked bleak, helped together in trying to find a way out of the darkness actively rather than giving up on living. People mistake depression for sadness and they do not know it is a brain disorder and as real as any physical illness. Many myths and beliefs ruled the day.

Roshni helpline reaches out to school and college students, professionals, elderly, the LGBT community with the power of listening.
